Terrible! Absolutely awful! Easily the worst “step-by-step” book I have ever read. It must rank as the least helpful and among the worst guide books ever written. This book made me angry that I had wasted money on something that most certainly is NOT a step by step guide no matter what it says on the back cover. I was led to believe it was. Mr. Popp admits that by writing the first edition of this book he was able to recover some, if not all (I presume), of the costs of building his model railroad. He should have stopped there rather than trying to develop even more income. Beginners like me would not have been deceived by the description. The book is really about his model railroad with a series of disjointed chapters that explain how he did it, sometimes missing the necessary detail and sometimes with unnecessary particulars of how to do some obviously simple task.Mr. Popp is obviously a model railroad expert and has built “a great model railroad” (words on the cover) but has a total inability to explain to any real beginner how to do it. He uses words and technical terms that have not been introduced and explained with the expectation that you know what they mean. “Feeders,” “jumpers,” “buses,” etc., etc., all with zero explanation. Chapter 3 on digital command and control systems?? “Installing decoders.” Making technical modifications to the insides of a model locomotive???? As a novice I would have thought that was one of the last things I needed to understand. The chapter goes into a morass of technical detail and keeps on digging itself deeper and deeper. According to Mr. Popp you need all that before you deal with how to model scenery rocks or apply ground cover or complete any of numerous more basic non-technical tasks. I don’t believe that is a recipe for success.Perhaps the problem with this book is that it really is just a series of magazine articles strung together with little thought to their connections and with even less consideration of what the beginner, who goes looking for a “step by step guide,” actually needs. My recommendation is that if you are a beginner you don’t waste your money on this book.

This is exactly what I wanted as a beginner model railroader. starts with the beginning. Full of useful information for the person who has, nothing..But wants to build a layout from scratch.

A great book filled with lots of ideas to help you get off to a great start.
