First thing that came to mind when I read the synopsis was Will Smith's new Netflix movie 'Bright'."Humans, orcs, mages, elves, and dwarves all jostle for success and survival in the cramped quarters of Yenara, while understaffed Watch Wardens struggle to keep its citizens in line."Having read the book in it's entirety, I still hold to that thought, except this isn't present day LA and swords replace guns. I also have to say that, for an Orbit publication, the cover left a bit to be desired. Not that the cover doesn't fit the story perfectly; just that it isn't one that would fly off of the shelves IMO. Having said all that, this is a great start to what I expect to be a wonderful series.Rem, a young northerner who is new to the city of Yenara, wakes up in the dungeons to await whatever fate is to come. When an unforeseen opportunity arises to join the Watch, Rem realizes he has been given a second chance. When introduced to his new partner, Torval, Rem realizes he may have bitten off more than he can chew. You see, Torval is like Denzel Washington's character, Alonzo, in the movie 'Training Day'; he tends to put enforcement of the law above justice and public safety (and honestly, it comes off as a bit racist and unacceptable). Well, Torval's former partner has gone missing and the two must put their heads together, and their prejudices aside, in order to uncover the truth that lies hidden in Yenara's deepest, darkest pits.To give you a picture, I think of Yenara sort of like King's Landing from GoT. The Watch is sort of like a Kings Guard/Night's Watch that patrol and serve the king's justice wherever deemed necessary. The difference being that there are five (5) Wards in Yenara and justice can only be dispensed in the Ward you are assigned. Cross the line and expect your lashings. There is a magic system in place, but it isn't a big focal point of the story except as a tool for healing. I'm sure this will be expanded in future books. The characters are also well drawn out and backstories are slowly explored, which gives the reader a sense of familiarity with the protagonists.Lucas has written a fine book and Simon Vance killed the audio (per his norm). The only real issue I had was with world-building as there really wasn't any. Just about everything takes place in Yenara and the only glimpses of other cities you receive are races from other parts of the world. I expect Lucas to expand the "universe" in the sequels and believe he will open up adventures in other Wards, but we will wait to see. I would also like to know a bit more about Torval as there has to be something hidden underneath all of the anger he holds so close to his heart
Nice hybrid of grimdark fantasy and gritty police procedural. Introducing a great new fantasy duo Torval the grizzled veteran dwarf Watchwarden with a tragic past and Rem a runaway noble rookie Watchwarden who stumbles into the profession entirely by accident. The two of them are police officers of a sort in the city of Yenara peopled by humans, dwarves, elves and Goblins. They maintain the peace within the constraints of ancient treaties between the respective races. They can arrest a goblin or elf but have to turn them over to a representative of thier race to be judged and punished. The story itself is a pretty standard gritty police procedural wherein Torval's partner is violently murdered putting him on a quest to bring his killers to justice. And Rem gets caught up in this quest learning the ropes along the way from a reluctant and often hostile Torval.
This book deserves a full and in-depth review and, trust me, it will get one - but for now, let me say that (fresh off of finishing it) I am enamored. The meeting of police procedural and fantasy was right up my alley. This was the kind of story I never knew I was waiting for, and those might just be my favorite kind of stories. The first quarter of the book may be slow for some, but the depth of the world-building and the rich introduction to Lucas' world served as the first hook to grab me. The main plot seems a bit slow to take off, or at least it's slow to reveal itself to the reader, but rest assured that every little mystery and breadcrumb is important and that, in the end, they all come to fruition. No question is left unanswered (Except maybe why the mages at the precinct weren't more readily utilized, but that was really rather minor.).All-in-all, I readily suggest this book to anyone looking for a fantasy with a touch of fresh flavor.
Fantastic book. Great characters that you root for. Especially Torval and Rem, the watchwardens that are trying to maintain peace throughout the city and at the same time trying to solve a murder of a former Partner in crime. Throw in several subplots, like Rem falling in love and a missing daughter of a powerful and rich citizen. This Beautiful living world is mixed with orcs and dwarves and elves and humans. This magical, yet believable city of yenara explores the regular day to day honest living street vendors setting up their markets, to offering a night life pleasures - the vices of gambling and ring side fights, to ale houses and illegal trading. Add in Magic and mind reading and witches and mages for good measure. The plot thickens at every turn of the page. An incredibly fast read. And the ending ties everything up nicely. Can't wait until book 2 comes out. I give it a Six star out of a five star rating.
As a sci-fi/fantasy genre virgin, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised and I honestly cannot wait to read the next book in this series!!! I read the first line and was instantly intrigued. I kept reading and was continuously entertained. I laughed, I cried, and 2 days later, I had read the entire book...I could NOT put it down! I have encouraged all my friends who are not necessarily sci-fi/fantasy connoisseurs to give this book a try. It is absolutely the best way to introduce someone to this genre, while also honoring everything that is unique and wonderful about it. Truly a buddy-cop adventure from start to finish. I look forward to going on more adventures with Rem and Torval!
Excellent fantasy/detective novel! I am very pleased with having discovered this author and what I hope will be a series of books. A bit like Terry Pratchett's 'Nightwatch' series set on Discworld, but without the levity (you're sorely missed, Terry!) I just hope I don't have to wait too long between installments!
