I agree with others that this is probably the best hot springs reference book for the SW out there.The books lists some commercial hot springs that just uses heated tap water. Meh. The listed GPS coordinates are the handiest feature of this guide. Best technique is to have two GPS apps (or a hardware GPS like Garmin that has both on-road and off-road mode). Use the on-road mode to get you to the vicinity by car. Then switch to off-road mode to take you rest of the way by foot. If you have an iPhone, NeoTreksGPS is a great app because it has free downloadable trail maps.That said, a word of caution is that the listed coordinates can be up to a FEW HUNDRED FEET off. My guess is that this perhaps was due to using older GPS units when writing the book (written almost 10 years ago) that aren't as accurate as modern units.In any event, a GPS unit is an essential item now. You don't want to do a 10-mile hike with directions like: "...follow the Mutau Flat road for over 3 miles. Take the right fork and then back down to another creek. The road forks right again the the trail continues west for another 3 miles. When the road splits again, take the right fork to the pools..." Yeah, I don't think so.

I used this book when I traveled to Colorado state 4 weeks ago. It listed 2 commercialized hotsprings near Denver, CO. and 2 more hotsprings near Steamboat Springs area.I'm using this again next week in Phoenix, AZ area.Pros:-It lists hotsprings location, address, telephone, homepage links, direction, for Southwest states with B&W photos with some maps.Cons:-It does not list 2 hotsprings I frequent in Lake Elsinor area.-The homepage link listed on the book for updated hotsprings information did not work.

This is a great book for anyone looking for hot springs in the southwest. Detailed pictures and directions to area springs and pools helped us determine which springs were easily accessible and which were not. We visited several pools in California last year and this year are checking out many more on our way to Arizona.

it doesn't cover any of the areas I am going to. IN the Southwest....

I bought this book based on reviews and recommendations and have used it to find a handful of hot springs in CA and NV, but have also been able to compare it to "Touring California and Nevada Hot Springs" book. I haven't used that book as much as this one tough.Summary:I think pretty much everything is better with the other book, except for the fact that this one has GPS coordinates and that the other book has worse high level overview maps. My recommendation is to buy the other book, and perhaps look up GPS coordinates to pools before you head out.Driving Directions:Both books have relatively poor driving directions. Perhaps they are a little bit better in this book but hard to tell. This book does have GPS coordinates though, and that REALLY helps and probably is the biggest advantage of this book. If you don't have a GPS, then it might be a good idea to also print driving directions from Google maps before you head out.Maps:This book has mid size maps the size of a state, and three maps of CA. The maps are pretty crappy and sketchy but does give you a decent overview of where the springs are. I think the other book was lacking these higher level overview maps, which was very frustrating! This book does have close ups on regions with many hot springs, or maps of driving directions to particularly tricky places, which is very helpful. Can't remember to what degree the other book also did.Pictures:This book has a black/white picture of every spring which is nice, but the quality of the pictures are often pretty poor and it's hard to judge much from them. I don't think the other book had pictures of all springs.Spring info:Comparable info between the books. I think this book contained some springs in CA/NV that weren't mentioned in the other book, but not sure about that.Region info:This book has none. The other book introduces the history of a region or nearby town. I personally really liked that part.Design/Layout:This book is ugly and kind of hard to navigate. Feels like it was designed by an 80 year old guy who never wrote a book before, and only had a typewriter as help. The other book has all info clearly separated into info on driving directions, pool temperatures, region info, etc. Very nice design.

THis is a great guide to hot springs in the southwest USA. We’ve been using this book for years. I bought another one to give as a gift. It’s a must have if you’re a hot-springer!
