This book takes a CBT approach to managing a child's anxiety. While I dont solely use CBT in my practice many of the techniques and charts provided can be useful for teens and their families. I also enjoyed the wording that the author uses, it was simple enough for a young reader to understand.
This was definitely an inside book into a teens mind! I bought this book and hoped it would be useful and what I got was so much more. I needed a book to help me connect with younger brother who by all means is self diagnosed with anxiety and panic. Man this booked wasn't just helpful for me but I gave it to him to read as well and it was an amazing book to share between the two of us. It really gave us the opportunity to connect, try some of the excercises and not just have a better opportunity to fix him but really fix our relationship with each other. This book forever bonded us! We had a fun time coming up with a panic plan. I can't believe we didn't come up with one of these before! What was neat about this is we created a panic plan for him but also one for me so that I don't get all worked up worrying about him getting worked up. This book was eye opening and brought a lot of self awareness to both of us. The information is easy to understand, practical and the perfect solution to help anxious teens AND their loved ones - whomever that may be - teachers, relatives, siblings, parents etc. I have seen my brother adopt a more better understanding of himself which is the biggest step I've seen in a while. GREAT BOOK!! HIghly recommend.
When I was a teenager, I suffered from terrible anxiety. As I’ve grown into an adult, I have learned strategies to help me deal with this. But I still remember how difficult it was for me as a teen. When my aunt told me that her son, my teenaged cousin, was suffering from anxiety, I decided to look into it. I bought a couple books on teen anxiety to send along. I loved this book. It’s easy to read with simple language and illustrations, while at the same time not being condescending to teens. This book utilizes some CBT therapy and outlines strategies and techniques to help teens. It provides specific exercises that even helped me, as an adult! I’m sending this to my aunt and cousin soon. I enjoyed this book and learned a lot.
By all accounts this book is great, because it has been helpful for many if not most of its readers. For me, however, it must not have been the right book. Reading it showed me exactly how much anxiety is affecting my life, but I didn't feel like it was in-depth enough for me.
I hand this book out like candy to my clients. Adults and teens, alike. It is a little on the simpler side for adults, but many find it easy to follow and quick to master. I see many adolescents struggling now with anxiety,and this book has helped a good percentage. Gives tools for every day stress, extraordinary stress and offers insight on when it is time to consider medication.
This book helped my 13-year-old understand her anxiety better than she had before. It had some good exercises that were worthwhile. The best chapters were the first ones that gave very good descriptions of the types of anxiety. She was able to pinpoint hers, and it seemed to help her to see her symptoms in print, like she is not alone. It was a helpful book, although not the answer to everything.
Would give this 0 stars if I could. So glad I began reading this before I gave it to my daughter. The second chapter discusses the pluses and minuses of getting help. Here it tells them that once they tell friends about their anxiety they “might not include you...or might not ask you to hang out with them...†due to their concerns about you. Why on earth would you hand that to a child who is just learning how to deal with her anxiety? I want my daughter to be open to dealing with this, not end up shutting down because she’s afraid of losing friends. Yes, people may treat you differently, but this is a terrible way to phrase it. I don’t care what degrees the authors have—that is completely ignorant. I absolutely will not share this with my child.
This book was recommended by my sons doctor. It may be good for others, but my son had a hard time connecting to it. There wasn't any activities to help him with his anxiety, so we bought another book that did and he loves it.
As a mental health professional, this is one of my favorite books for teaching teens about anxiety. Easy to read and a great chapter on panic. Just have to get past the creepy cover!
