Enjoy a few photos towards the middle of the book.This true story, written by a Dutch native, is very well done. The book does not come across as jagged and jarred like some do in translation. It is an easy and EXTREMELY fascinating read incorporating much world history from the settling of Jamestown, NY long before Allene (1872 - 1955) came along and taking the reader through the 1800's and into the 1900's informing of the extreme wealth and fortune, the economic crashes, the doom of Titanic and both World War I and II. Beautiful, descriptive writing right from the start engages the reader and I quickly became immersed in Allene's story of love, tragedy, heartache, riches and so much more. If you think scandal on Wall Street is a new thing, read this book and see what was happening all the way back in the 1800's. Most readers will recognize many other famous names mentioned in this biography and likely be fascinated by the ties and acquaintances involved. I was.PLEASE NOTE that this book is CLEAN. There are NO sex scenes nor any bad language. Very refreshing and a read I would highly recommend.I downloaded this book as my choice for the Kindle April First read. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
This is one of the best books I've read in a while, and definitely the best "Prime Reads" books I've read. It was so well written and the story was so interesting I had to keep reminding myself it was a biography, not a novel. It definitely reads like a novel. I was traveling when I got the book and since I was waiting in airports or on an airplane most of the day, I read the entire book in one day. It passed the time so well, I didn't even mind that my flight was delayed.If you are interested in the Gilded Age, or the Victorian/Edwardian eras, this is definitely for you. I recently read The Transatlantic Marriage Bureau: Husband hunting in the Gilded Age: How American heiresses conquered the aristocracy by Julie Ferry which I also recommend.
As an Amazon Prime and Prime Unlimited member, I downloaded this book from their list of free first of the month selections. Based on the topic and historical period covered, I expected to love the book - but instead was soooo disappointed! It's basically a third-person account written in a passive, boring, repetitive (how many times do we need to be told about the subject's "courage"?), and cliche-rich rich style that fails to bring to life what surely must have been a fascinating woman. Unfortunately, we see her from the outside, with the only glimpses of her interior thoughts and emotions coming at the very end when the author includes a few excerpts of letters written when she is dying. As the author never heard of the "show, don't tell" guideline for writing engaging biographies?In an epilogue, the author describes how this book originated with research she did for her PhD and includes a bibliography of works consulted - but why did she not use primary or even secondary sources such as letters written by or about Allene Tew?
Very interesting book about a woman who constantly reinvented herself and didn’t let misfortune stop her. She was a very strong person and this insight into her life and times was a good read
Before there was Grace Kelly there was Allene Tew. She was married five times, suffered the loss of all her children and a cherished husband. She endured the scandal of divorce and through it all managed her growing wealth. She took a bath in 1929, but was one of the wealthiest women in the world by 1945. Her hobby was buying houses and apartments and decorating them from New York and Newport to Paris, Rome, and the south of France. A fascinating life.
This is a very well written, well translated Story of an American girl from Wisconsin, who marries well four times. The book starts off with the story of her great grandfather and grandfather and their immigration to America. The All American pioneer story of making something from nothing and being in the right place at the right time and making the most of everything. Allene’s father was the youngest child of her grandfather and didn’t marry as well, nor did he have the financial connectionS his brother did. He moved to Wisconsin and that is where the story of Allene begins. Enjoyable and definitely one of my favorite Kindle First books.
