Review

"Collision on Tenerife is compelling and engaging, taking the reader from how it happened to why it happened, and revealing the series of individually inconsequential decisions that perfectly aligned and resulted in disaster. A must read." (Mark Martin, captain, American Airlines (retired))"Here we have - finally - a harrowing account, impressively researched and thoroughly reported, of the world's worst air disaster. Ziomek offers deep insight into not only the behavioral errors that led up to the disaster, but also psychological aspects of catastrophe and its aftereffects. A story that lingers in the mind long after the reading." (Gillian Flynn, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller "Gone Girl" and "Sharp Objects," soon to be an HBO series)"Ziomek's nail-biting narrative of the horrific crash and aftermath of two jumbo jets - still the worst air crash in history - is impossible to put down. The detailed account of each step leading to the disaster is both frightening and a cautionary tale on how a few missed signals and miscommunications can put a plane on a trajectory to doom. More important, it outlines what has been done to prevent similar crashes in the future - and what still remains to be done." (Ellen Shearer, professor, Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University; co-editor, "Truth Counts: A Practical Guide for News Consumers;" editor and author of three other books)"This book tells the story of what my parents went through as they miraculously survived the Pan Am crash. Yet, only those close to my mother would know the impact this crash had on everything she did for the remainder of her life." (Linda Hopkins, one of Caroline and Warren Hopkins' daughters)"A work of exhaustive reporting and riveting storytelling, Ziomek's Collision on Tenerife recounts the string of bizarre events that resulted in one of the world's most horrific transportation disasters, and how the deaths of more than 500 people on a remote island airstrip changed the way airlines think about safety in the air and on the ground. Read it - and make sure you know where the exit rows are." (Craig LaMay, Northwestern University professor and author of "Exporting Press Freedom," "Inside the Presidential Debates" (with Newton Minow), and five other books)"I can't remember using all of these adjectives to describe a book: dramatic, poignant AND informative. But those are the adjectives I use to describe Collision on Tenerife. I left this book enlightened about many things human and factual. It's a great read."  (Al Bernstein, Showtime Sports Broadcaster and author, "30 Years, 30 Undeniable Truths")"It has taken four decades, but we finally have a definitive, remarkably comprehensive account of what remains the worst disaster in aviation history. Journalist Jon Ziomek tells the gripping story of the perfect storm of weather and human error that took 583 lives at Tenerife airport on a foggy evening in March, 1977. Not since Piers Paul Read's Alive have we had such a meticulous account of a plane crash and all the lives it took, and touched - yet without sentimentalization. Collision on Tenerife is many things: a detailed post-mortem of what, exactly, went wrong; an agonizing narrative of how hundreds of people managed to survive the terrible ordeal; and a striking lesson in what to do, and not do, in the event of a disaster. A few of the takeaways: Get out of your seat. Help those around you. And no, the flight attendant isn't coming." (Laura Kwerel, public radio producer)"Jon Ziomek has written a riveting, deeply moving account of the worst aviation disaster in world history. This narrative reads like a novel—but the lessons it imparts could save your life. Everyone who flies regularly for business or pleasure should read this important book." (Kevin Peraino, journalist and author of "A Force So Swift: Mao, Truman, and the Birth of Modern China, 1949" and "Lincoln In The World")"Ziomek paints a vivid, moment-by-moment portrait of a tragedy that both occurred 40 years ago and went unrecorded by any video camera. The level of detail is staggering - the emotions raw and real. As the tragedy unfolds before your eyes and the mistakes that could have prevented it are unveiled, I could not put Collision on Tenerife down." (Rich O'Malley, author of the upcoming "One Lucky Fan" and former executive editor, New York Daily News)"In a Twitter world, analysis is a fortune cookie hissy fit. To understand how and why things really happen means doing the hard journalistic work that reveals the concentric circles of connectedness before, during and after catastrophes. Collision on Tenerife is it." (Jack Hafferkamp, Chicago journalist and author of "Sepsis" and "Travel Writer")

This book is simply outstanding. Not only because of how thoroughly it's presented, and how graphically yet respectfully and tastefully the accident itself is described, but the way in which the story is told: It completely draws you in from the very first sentences-- by meeting the characters before they set out to travel, and then by gradually learning all of the details of how it unfolded, and, later, how those passengers we'd read about escaped, or didn't escape. The accident itself was a human one, and this book treats it in an entirely human way. There's also the detailed aftermath, where we learn about autopsies, burials, memorials, hospital stays, homecomings, and government reports -- with very valuable airplane safety advice sandwiched in between (we are lifelong frequent fliers, and thought we knew it all when it came to safety, but learned a heck of a lot in this section) and information about the pyschological side of tragedy aftermath. As longtime fans of Tenerife, we thought we knew most everything about this crash, but Mr. Ziomek's narrative is the best and most complete we have ever encountered, for three reasons: 1) He is a pro researcher 2) he is a pro storyteller, and 3) his personal connection with two of the crash survivors lends a dimension that no other depiction of this tragedy has (including sweet letters from second-graders at St. Norbert's school that will make you cry). There's no sensationalism here; just a very well-told, moving, true story that everybody should read.

Have you ever felt helpless on a plane? Do you wonder why people don't pay attention to the flight attendants when they give their safety speeches? Do you want to feel safer? Here's your answer: read about the world's worst aviation disaster in history! Collision on Tenerife by Jon Ziomek is a living, written document and nail-biting suspense story about the events of March 27, 1977 when a KLM Royal Dutch Airways 747 crashed into a Pan Am World Airways 747 on a foggy runway in the Canary Islands. You'll feel safer because Jon tells you what the survivors did to save themselves and how you can learn from them. Jon handles terrifying details of survival with great respect while honoring those who perished. Because he is an expert storyteller who personally interviewed many survivors, no one else would be as qualified to lift this story out of time and create such a riveting narrative. I loved this book from start to finish!

THE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN THE PILOTS AND CONTROL TOWER ARE EXTREMELY INTERESTING. THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ESCAPING PASSENGERS AND CREW IN THE MAYHEM ARE A MUST READ. INTERVIEWS WITH THE SURVIVORS BEFORE AND AFTER THE CRASH MAKES RIVETTING READING. SOMETIMES THE ACCOUNTS OF SURVIVORS WAS SO SPELLBINDING IT HAD ME TEARY EYED. FOR THIS I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT FIVE STARS.BUT OH, OH OH!, THEN THERE ARE ENDLESS PAGES AND CHAPTERS OF BORING, PAGE THROUGH, BACKGROUND ON SAFETY IN AVIATION AND ENDLESS CHAPTERS OF UNINTERESTING PHYSYCOLOGICAL STUDIES OF "BATTLE FATIGUE" OR AS WE KNOW IT NOW: POST TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME. THEN THERE IS ENDLESS PAGES OF BACKGROUND ON UNKNOWN PASSENGERS. SO I CANNOT GIVE IT MORE THAN THREE STARS BECAUSE OF THE ENDLESS PAGES AND CHAPTERS OF TOTALLY UNINTERESTING MATERIAL.

3.5 starsThe Tenerife disaster has long deserved to be the focus of a full-length book, and for that I give the author a lot of credit. However, the writing lacks vivacity and is quite clunky in some parts. In addition, though the author wanted to stress the importance of passenger preparation, he did so by often repeating the same points.

This is one of the most riveting nonfiction books I’ve read. It reads like a novel and, once I started it, I kept coming back until I reached the end. From the first few pages onward, I was awed by the amount of research, the number of interviews, and the attention to detail journalist Jon Ziomek devoted to this project. The author clearly is a good organizer of a huge amount of information, a good story teller, and a very good writer. But what impressed me even more is the evidence the narrative provides that he also is a thoughtful, skilled and trusted interviewer. Ziomek obtained painful memories and very personal feelings and thoughts about this tragedy , and reported what he learned in a matter-of-fact and kind manner. In addition to reporting the ways some passengers survived the crash and how they were affected by it, the author inserts considerable information about plane crashes, how people tend to react, and what has been done and is yet to be done about aviation safety. I, for one, will forever be more attentive to the safety instructions provided by flight attendants and the seat back card, and learn where the exits are!I can imagine this book will come to be regarded as a model of reporting to be emulated by aspiring journalists.

An impressive work of dogged detail work. Read it to understand how a perfect storm of details and fog combined to kill 583 people. Read it, and you'll never not watch the safety video or know where the exits are again.

It's amazing how such a series of presumably unrelated events can come to fruition as a horrible incident, with such lasting and harmful consequences.
