I love astronomy and any study of the Universe, so this book by my favorite astrophysicist, Dr. Tyson, is exactly what I wanted. The sense of humor and playfulness combined with actual facts is irresistable! So much so that i bought the companion 2nd book, "Just Visiting This Planet". What better tour guide than the famous (infamous?) wizard of Camelot fame, Merlin! You'll love this book no matter what age you are (chronologically or otherwise!).
I enjoyed Dr. Tyson's lighthearted answers to readers' questions, but, since it was written in the late 1980's, some of those answers are no longer accurate (e.g. age of the universe, expansion is slowing, etc.). But it's still an enjoyable breakfast read and would probably be good as an introduction to astrophysics for kids; and you can be the hero by pointing out that things have changed since the book was written (not a bad lesson for them to learn).
The author is a genius, plain & simple. In fact if science has always escaped you then this guy is who you need to be reading.In this book Merlin (Dr. Tyson) answers real questions about things that you may have been wodering about for a long time. He explains the scientific facts behind the answers in a concise, illuminating and entertaining fashion.What would happen if the world suddenly stopped roating? Think about it for a few moments. The answer to this question and many more are in this book. Buy it for you and get a copy for the budding scientist that you know.
Understandable explanations of basic questions about astrophysics and other sciences; they are answered with just a bit of snarkiness. It can be read in small bits. The biggest problem is the early copyright date.
If you have a kid who's interested in astronomy, this is a terrific buy. It's in a question/answer format, with Merlin answering the questions. Each question/answer is on its own page, and there is no order dependency. This means you can open the book to any page at all and just start reading. It's fun and informative.As to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson - what can I say that hasn't already been said. When it comes to astronomy, Dr. Tyson writes the best stuff I've seen for non-scientists, puts in a language we can understand, and adds enough humor to make for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.
An easy-to-read Q&A book about the universe. Some of the replies have been superceded by more recent discoveries, but that's part of the beauty of science.
Merlin's humor can make you smile and while his answers can be illuminating, there is still much that someone not well versed in astronomy or astrophysics may have a hard time grasping. The Glossary of Selected Terms helps; still, most answers are to be studied if real understanding is desired.
This was an easy read relative to the sometimes difficult scientific content. I enjoyed the question and answer format and the little bit of humor sprinkled in.
